Petition text
WHEREAS the residents of Vieux-Montréal have observed significant changes in their neighbourhood, raising concerns about the safety and the preservation of its unique heritage;
WHEREAS public security in Québec is responsible for protecting citizens and overseeing tourist accommodation establishments;
WHEREAS the increase in tourist accommodations exacerbates the housing crisis and negatively impacts the quality of life of the neighbourhood’s residents;
WHEREAS the built heritage of Vieux-Montréal must be preserved in accordance with the Act to amend the Cultural Heritage Act (Bill 69), which mandates an inventory of heritage buildings constructed before 1940;
WHEREAS fire protection requirements in Québec are established by the National Fire Code of Canada 2010 (NFC), as adapted for Québec, and an update is necessary to address current safety needs;
WHEREAS a moratorium is essential until the inventory of heritage buildings is completed and building standards, including the requirement for sprinklers, are updated to ensure the safety of residents and the preservation of heritage;
We, the undersigned, ask the Government of Québec to suspend the issuance of new tourist accommodation permits in Vieux-Montréal until the inventory of heritage buildings is completed and building standards are updated to protect these historic buildings and ensure the safety of the population.
