Petition:
Request to repeal certain sections of Bill 21 that affect the rights and freedoms of marginalized individuals

Petition text

WHEREAS Bill 21 disproportionately impacts marginalized Quebecers who choose to express their values through their religion;

WHEREAS the Charter of human rights and freedoms states: “[…] all human beings are equal in worth and dignity and are entitled to equal protection of the law”;

WHEREAS Bill 21 threatens the values of equality, diversity, and inclusion by prohibiting a segment of the population from living freely as a result of the Québec Legislature invoking the controversial section 33, the ”notwithstanding clause”, of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms;

WHEREAS the wearing of religious symbols or attire does not impair an individual from exercising their duties as a teacher, lawyer, physician, dentist, midwife or childcare provider;

WHEREAS the livelihood of marginalized Quebecers openly targeted by hate crimes will continue to decline if this legislative body fails to consider the fundamental rights and freedoms of its people;

We, the undersigned, ask the Government of Québec to immediately repeal the portions of Bill 21 that affect the rights and freedoms of marginalized individuals, in order to exclude: teachers, lawyers, physicians, dentists, midwives, and childcare providers, as well as any individuals whose duties and functions are not mentally or physically impeded by their religious symbols or clothing.
