Petition:
Election of a mayor in the borough of Ville-Marie by the citizens of the borough
Petition text
WHEREAS the mayor of Montreal is also the designated mayor for the borough of Ville-Marie;
WHEREAS since 2009, the Ville-Marie borough has been the only borough in Montreal where the citizens do not have the choice of electing their own mayor;
WHEREAS the Ville-Marie borough council is made up of 6 representatives, 2 of whom are appointed by the mayor of Montreal;
WHEREAS half of the votes on the Ville-Marie Borough Council are therefore cast by representatives who are not directly elected by the citizens of the Borough;
WHEREAS the mayor, given the scope of his responsibilities towards the City of Montreal and its boroughs, cannot be adequately present in the Ville-Marie borough to ensure its proper development;
WHEREAS there is a crying need for effective and inclusive local governance in the Ville-Marie borough;
WHEREAS the Ville-Marie borough requires a full-time mayor, chosen by the citizens of Ville-Marie, who will be present in the borough and meet the needs of the community;
We, the undersigned, ask the government of Québec:
-
To support our right to local democracy and equal representation to other residents of Montreal by granting them the right to elect their own mayor;
-
To delete paragraph 2 of article 17 of the Charter of the City of Montreal which stipulates that the mayor of Montreal is also the designated mayor of the borough of Ville-Marie.
