Improvement of the safety of farm animals and agricultural facilities

WHEREAS statistics from the Ministry of Public Security indicate an average of four farm building fires per week;
 
WHEREAS these fires kill tens of thousands of farmed animal beings every year in Quebec;
 
WHEREAS measures to prevent barn fires and to improve the safety of farmed animal beings are recommended by experts in the agricultural field;
 
We, the undersigned, ask the Government of Québec to protect farmed animal beings by enacting standards which prevent barn fires in farm buildings, such as:

• the development and provision of awareness and education programs on barn fire prevention by local fire departments;
• the requirement of firewalls for rooms which house electrical installations;
• the storage of unused flammable material in a building separate from animal beings;
• the strengthening of annual inspections and maintenance standards of electrical systems, heating systems, structural integrity and sprinklers;
• the requirement of installation of a water tank and pump near buildings where animal beings are housed;
• the requirement of installation of sprinklers as well as heat detectors in buildings where animal beings are housed, connected to a fire safety service and to the home of the owners.
