Control of access to pornography and implementation of an awareness campaign on its harmfulness to young people

WHEREAS it is estimated that 90% of boys and 60% of girls view online pornography before the age of 18;
WHEREAS the average age at which boys discover pornography is 12 years;
WHEREAS most of the sexual material show scenes of acts of violence, domination, degradation and humiliation against women and girls;
WEREAS the effects of the ease of access to violent and demeaning sexual material are a public health issue;
WHEREAS exposing a child to sexual material of violent nature is a form of abuse;
WHEREAS article 17 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child requires that Canada put in place measures to protect children from types of media injurious to their well-being;
We, the undersigned, ask that the Government of Québec:

require effective age verification for all adult websites;

require that all Internet service providers in Québec filter pornography by default and require that consumers must express their choice to access it;

develop an awareness campaign targeting teachers, health professionals and parents in order to expose the harmfulness of pornography.
