Petition:
Amending the Tobacco Act to protect youth

Petition text

WHEREAS more than 30,000 youths start smoking each year, are actively recruited by the tobacco industry with colourful, flavoured, and trendy products, and the majority of these youths will become long-time smokers;

WHEREAS the smoking rate in Quebec has remained unchanged at around 20% for the past six years with 1.5 million smokers, which means that for every smoker who quits, a youth becomes addicted;

WHEREAS after trying to quit for a year, 95% of teenagers give up and continue smoking;

WHEREAS a third of youths, between 18 and 24, are smokers;

WHEREAS tobacco is responsible for 30% of all cancers and is the leading cause of preventable death in Quebec;

WHEREAS in 10 years, tobacco has killed 100,000 Quebecers and cost our society $40 billion;

The signatories of this petition ask the Quebec National Assembly to ban flavours (including menthol), impose a moratorium on tobacco products, adopt plain and standardized packaging (including a ban on cigarettes with a diameter of less than 7.5 mm), and subject electronic cigarettes to the Tobacco Act.
