Petition text

WHEREAS the Peter-McGill neighbourhood in Ville-Marie has over 3,700 family households, with an increase of 710 families since 2016;

WHEREAS there is no elementary school in the neighbourhood;

WHEREAS access to a neighbourhood school is a fundamental right, and the absence of a school in a densely populated area goes against the principles of equity and accessibility;

WHEREAS proximity to a school fosters a sense of belonging, motivation and long-term academic success, while distance contributes to school dropout rates;

WHEREAS the distance to existing schools extends children’s days, increases their fatigue and limits their access to extracurricular activities, hindering their academic and social development, and increases the burden on parents;

WHEREAS nearly half of Peter-McGill children are vulnerable in at least one area of school readiness and cannot benefit from homework assistance because they live too far from school;

WHEREAS the absence of an elementary school in Peter-McGill places additional strain on nearby schools, which are already struggling to meet the needs of a growing population, thereby affecting the quality of education;

We, the undersigned, ask the Government of Québec to:

  • recognize the urgency of the situation and uphold its commitment to families; and
  • fund and expedite the construction of an elementary school to ensure fair access to education.
