Petition text
WHEREAS the majority of suicides in Quebec are commited by men;
WHEREAS Quebec men are 3 times more likely to commit suicide than women in certain age groups;
WHEREAS men’s suicide attempts are more likely to succeed;
WHEREAS men are less likely to seek help for their mental health problems;
WHEREAS the Quebec government is losing billions of dollars treating otherwise preventable serious mental health issues in men, as well as losing out on income taxes when people are unable to work;
WHEREAS existing programs within the broader mandate of Santé Québec are too broad and lack specific vision to adequately respond to the unique men’s mental health crisis;
We, the signatories, ask the Government of Quebec:
- to formally recognize the men's mental health crisis as such, and that it is the Government’s responsibility to address it;
- to formally recognize the unique causes, challenges, obstacles and need for specific solutions to the men's mental health crisis; and
- to establish a department, agency, body or institution dedicated solely to recognizing mental health and suicide problems in men, identifying and implementing solutions, and providing support to those affected.
