Petition:
Request for a moratorium on logging in Saint-Zénon
Petition text
WHEREAS citizens’ concerns have been ignored in the various stages of the consultations;
WHEREAS forest harvesting in the areas concerned will not ensure the renewal of the forest according to sustainable forest development principles, such as the perpetuity of the forest environment, because their spatial distribution is concentrated in habitats around lakes and in resort areas and not enough time has elapsed since the last harvesting operations;
WHEREAS users are opposed to the announced forest harvest because it will diminish the wealth of biodiversity, destroy the quality of the lakes—including the limpidity of Crystal Lake, a headwater lake that is home to a vulnerable population of lake trout—potentially damage the wetlands and increase runoff causing shorelines to erode, negatively impact the quality of life of shoreline residents and the beauty of the landscape, and endanger the maintenance of recreational and restorative activities;
WHEREAS this is not socially acceptable and affects social cohesion, particularly because the forest’s productive capacity is the only criterion taken into consideration and not its diversified use, thereby harming cohabitation between recreational and tourism activities, and forestry operations and users;
WHEREAS applications for protected areas are being submitted to achieve the government's goal of protecting 30% of the territory;
We, the signatories, demand that the Government of Quebec declare a moratorium on forest harvesting in the areas concerned, as these operations could cause losses and injustices to the environment, recreation and tourism in Saint-Zénon.
