Petition:
Prevention of desecration of the graves of the Irish founders and settlers of the City of Saint-Colomba
Petition text
WHEREAS, the enactment of the Act respecting Roman Catholic cemetery companies has led to the desecration of the graves of early Irish settlers in the Town of Saint-Colomban, Quebec;
WHEREAS, for over 20 years, descendants of these early settlers have dedicated their time and efforts to preserve the graveyard at Saint-Colomban through volunteering and fundraising;
WHEREAS, the land for this graveyard was originally donated by the Irish settlers of Saint-Colomban, specifically Edward Elliott and Mary Phelan-Skehan in 1832;
WHEREAS, it remains unclear whether the Fabrique of the Parish of Saint-Colomban has the legal right to resell the burial plots in perpetuity and belonging to the original Irish founders of the Parish;
WHEREAS, there is no restriction on expanding the current graveyard to accommodate additional space;
We, the undersigned, respectfully request that the Government of Quebec repeal, amend, or clarify the Act respecting Roman Catholic cemetery companies to prevent any further desecration of the grave sites of the Irish founders and settlers of the Town of Saint-Colomban.
