Petition:
Polyfluoroalkyl Substance Ban to Protect Drinking Water and Save Wildlife
Petition text
WHEREAS Polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been found to increase the risk of some cancers (prostate, kidney, testicular), reduce the ability of the body’s immune system to fight infections (reduced vaccine response), interfere with the body’s natural hormones, and increase cholesterol levels and the risk of obesity;
WHEREAS more than 99% of Canadians have been found to have traces of PFAS in their blood;
WHEREAS these substances affect not only humans, but also aquatic life, and research has found that freshwater fish across the St. Lawrence River and Great Lakes regions contain PFAS;
WHEREAS these substances are highly resistant to degradation;
WHEREAS Environment Canada has previously recognized small specific subsets of PFAS as “toxic” under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act;
WHEREAS the vast majority of PFAS remain completely unregulated in Canada;
We, the undersigned, ask the government of Quebec to ban the use of the harmful Poly-fluoroalkyl (PFAS) chemicals in Québec affecting our drinking water and harming wildlife in St-Lawrence.
