Introduction of measures concerning the exposure of young people to screens
Petition text
CONSIDERING THAT screens, including mobile phones, tablets, computers and televisions, are now an integral part of the daily lives of young Quebecers;
CONSIDERING THAT research and studies are increasingly demonstrating the harmful effects of excessive screen exposure, especially on young people’s mental health, cognitive development and sleeping habits;
CONSIDERING THAT a 2021 study concluded that 85% of young people aged 6 to 12 and 95% of teenagers do not meet the recommendations for limited screen time;
CONSIDERING THAT Quebec has the responsibility to protect the well-being of its youth and to foster an environment conducive to healthy and balanced development;
CONSIDERING THAT proactive measures are necessary to protect the health and well-being of young Quebecers in an increasingly digital world;
CONSIDERING the need for awareness and educational initiatives aimed at parents, educators and young people on the potential risks linked to excessive screen exposure and on best practices for healthy and responsible screen use;
CONSIDERING the importance of continued research into the long-term impacts of screen exposure on young people and of supporting efforts to promote healthy and enriching alternatives;
We, the undersigned, ask the Government of Québec to establish clear guidelines and regulatory policies regarding recommended screen time for our young people in educational, family and social environments.
